about

modern and contemporary brazilian furniture

One of the main design galleries in Brazil, Mercado Moderno has played a prominent role in the recent process of global appreciation of modern Brazilian furniture. Its foundation, in 2001, coincided with the moment when, after two decades of ostracism, a historical review began in Brazil on this rich production from the period between the 1940s and 1970s. A large part of its collection was acquired at antique auctions. companies, in which few parts were specified and there were no value parameters. The undertaking involved arduous research work, in contact with designers, heirs and experts, offset by the amazement of discovering small treasures every day. This was – and still is today – the routine of the founding partners, Alberto Vicente, Marcelo Vasconcellos and Rosana Vicente, in a journey that consolidated them as leading experts in the national and international market. And it unfolded into several actions, to record, expand and disseminate the knowledge acquired, such as the organization and support of some of the fundamental works of literature on the subject and the curation of exhibitions in reference institutions in several Brazilian cities.

In this trajectory, the gallery also approached the main names of contemporary Brazilian design production, and today represents some of the most creative and consistent initiatives in this segment, among them Mameluca Studio, Alê Jordão, Hugo França, Ines Schertel, Rodrigo Simão, Gustavo Bittencourt , Guto Índio da Costa, Rodrigo Ohtake and Alander Espécie.

Mercado Moderno has expanded its global presence by way of its American branch and is equipped to sell from its catalogue directly to buyers across the world. In Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, the gallery continues to receive design enthusiastic clients, architects, interior designers, and collectors, who can appreciate a unique array of furniture, one-of-a-kind pieces and rare objects, painstakingly collected by the owners.
