Joaquim Tenreiro

Joaquim Tenreiro

Melo, Portugal, 1906–1992

Joaquim Tenreiro was born in Melo, Portugal, and was trained in geometric drawing and painting, while learning woodworking from his father, a craftsman. This early combination of artistic training and manual skill shaped his lifelong approach to furniture design.

After establishing himself in Brazil, he worked at the furniture factory and interior design studio Laubisch & Hirth and later at Leandro Martins, where he deepened his experience with production and modern interiors. In 1943, he founded the Langenbach e Tenreiro workshop, which later evolved into Tenreiro Móveis e Decorações, marking his full transition into independent design practice.

Tenreiro became one of the key pioneers of Brazilian modern furniture, known for introducing a new sense of lightness, proportion, and structural clarity, moving away from heavy, ornamental traditions. He left the company in 1968 and retired from active design work, passing away in 1992 in Itapira, São Paulo, at the age of 86.
