Belmonte, Brazil, 1919–2001
José Zanine Caldas was born in Belmonte, Bahia, and became one of the most influential self-taught figures in Brazilian modern design. In the 1940s, he established a model-making workshop that quickly gained recognition for its technical precision and innovative approach to form, later teaching model-making techniques to architecture students at the University of São Paulo.
In 1949, he founded Fábrica de Móveis Z, which produced foldable and functional furniture aligned with the emerging modernist ethos. Over time, his practice expanded beyond furniture into architecture and landscape design, reinforcing his multidisciplinary approach.
Zanine is especially known for his sculptural solid wood furniture, carved directly from natural forms, where structure, volume, and material are treated in an expressive and organic way. His work bridges design, craft, and architecture, establishing him as a key reference in Brazilian modernism.
