Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1907–2012

Oscar Niemeyer was Brazil's preeminent modernist architect, whose influence on furniture and interior design shaped the country's built environment throughout the twentieth century. His daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer (1929–2012) was an architect and designer who collaborated extensively with her father on furnishings for Brasília's government buildings. In 1977, Anna Maria opened Galeria Anna Maria Niemeyer in Rio de Janeiro, which became a pivotal cultural space in the decades that followed.
